Veterans' Words

MY GROUP

Worn cold
And haggard
Hungry to the bone
A struggling group
Staggered through
The valley
Not seeing
Not hearing
Not feeling
Sickly skin
Held they erect
And stretched tight,
In contrast to what once was.

It was the most terrible of times
When death was sudden
And swift
No more pain only silence
could be heard
echoing from the tunnel of death.

~ Shorty Estabrook, Survivor of the Tiger Death March, Korea, 1950
